How would a graphic designer approach any information graphics with special needs in mind?

Researching how people with autism see and read the world around them and if there is a definitive form of visual communication that all within the spectrum can relate to. Is there anybody out there with experience of dealing with this area of design? Aware of P.E.C.S. and other communication aids but see how abstraction/variation in drawings/pictures can become illedgible. Would like different educated opinions to expand on subject.

Think about type, for example, as abstract shapes and not letters. Colours play an important role too. As there is no definite answer for design for the masses, nor is there a specific way of designing for those with autism.
